Blog Assignment #2: Chibi Godzilla (ちびゴジラ)

 こんにちは!

This week for our blog post, we were tasked with watching some sort of Japanese media, preferable without subtitles. For this I watched Chibi Godzilla (ちびゴジラ) which is accessible through Toho's official youtube channel. I will link that episode I watched below, so you can check it out if you want.

For starters, I love Godzilla. Growing up, it was one of my favorite movie franchises. I was always fascinated by its practical special effects. I thought it was so cool that they built an entire miniature city for the actor in the monster suit to destroy. It always seemed so detailed. Through this love of Godzilla, I found Chibi Godizlla. It is an animated show made for children, so it's simpler than other forms of media. This is mostly why I chose it for this assignment. Unlike Godzilla, it's story revolves around comedy.

I specifically watched the first episode of the series for this assignment. I have seen it with subtitles several years ago, but this time I turned off the subtitles and tried to pick out anything I recognized. I found it difficult to do this though. The characters spoke so fast many of the words blended together, so it was difficult to find when one started and the next stopped. This isn't bad though. The actors has a certain flow to their voice that I don't hear much in English. This could be because they are rehearsed actors though. The show also has several instances where Japanese subtitles are shown on screen. From these, I noticed that there were no spaces in between words like there are in English.

Overall I really enjoyed Chibi Godzilla, and I hope you enjoy it too.

  1. Nice choice! I'm a fan of the original Godzilla movies too--I actually watched the 1954 Godzilla for a class last year, and it was very interesting to watch. This Chibi version was a lot of fun to watch! Thanks for sharing!

  2. This post especially caught my attention because I recently watched the film Godzilla Minus One! I haven’t seen many movies with creatures like Godzilla or King Kong, but Godzilla Minus One really gave me a new appreciation for the franchise. I’m curious to hear your thoughts on the film if you’ve seen it, and if there are any others you’d recommend!
